Par culottes angļu valodā dēvē pusgarus bikšu svārkus. Oriģināli nosaukums radies no franču valodas vārda culotte, kas parādījās 16. gs. beigās un apzīmēja vīriešu īsbikses. Pusgadsmita laikā vārdu jau stabili lietoja, apzīmējot vīriešu īsbikses, kas sniedzās līdz celim.
Bikšu svārku tuvas radinices sieviešu apģērba vēsturē meklējamas 19. gs. vidū, kad parādījās tā sauktās blūmeres – agrīnās sieviešu bikses, kuras valkāja zem virssvārkiem apakšsvārku veidā. Sākotnēji tās valkāja ar svārkiem, kuri sedza tikai nedaudz vairāk par ceļgalu, tādā veidā atsedzot bikšu apakšdaļu. Šī bija visai avangrdiska mode un sabiedrības vairākums to nosodīja. Tikai nedaudz vēlāk blūmeres sāka valkāt kā apakšsvārkus zem krinolīna, bet 19. gs. beigās tās ieņēma svarīgu lomu to sieviešu garderobēs, kuras brauca ar velosipēdu.
Culottes are divided / spit skirts. Originally name was derived from French name culotte which occurred in the end of the 16th century and stands for short men trousers. After a half-century the name was fully accepted and described trousers ending just below the knee.
In the history of women fashion you could find similar garment in the middle of the 19th century – so called bloomers. Those were forerunners for women trousers and were worn as a petticoat. Originally they were worn under skirt that ended just below the knee so the bottoms of the trousers could be seen. That derived a big indignation in society and was found as an avant-garde. Only a bit later, when crinoline was largely accepted, bloomers were worn as a petticoat, but at the end of the 19th century they took an important role in wardrobe of those ladies who were riding a bicycle.
